“I’ve learned so much over these past 8+ years as a teacher. I know how to correct mistakes and to support students in making really beautiful creations, but more importantly, I’ve really found my own voice as a teacher.
The most important thing that I wish for my students to really hear and assimilate is much deeper than the external practices and techniques that I can share.
It’s that the practice of crafting- in addition to being an opportunity to express artistically and creatively – is also an opportunity to tune into the present moment. It’s about taking the time to slow down, to be intentional, to really tune into the material and give thanks for the ability to create.
Broom-making is a mindfulness practice and the end product delivers a tool that is rich in metaphor. I invite you to notice whats coming up in the process – insecurity, fear of imperfection, a desire to please others or to be good by doing it right – whatever it is for you – just to really notice, not judge, but notice.

When it comes to the actual brooms I made, the sweeper broom is now about a year and a half old and gets used daily. She still looks almost new and continues to sweep better than any other broom I have ever used. One of the turkey wing brooms I made disappeared into my husband’s wood-work shop and he won’t give it back. Good thing I made two!
