Description
During this pre-recorded workshop, Emileigh will walk you through making a full-length Appalachian style sweeper broom from start to finish. Instruction will cover traditional broom-tying techniques, weaving with whole pieces of broomcorn (sorghum) and stitching the broom flat.
This is an intermediate-level class. Some prior broommaking experience is ideal, though participants with general experience in crafting or handwork are welcome. Please note that broommaking is physically demanding; moderate hand and upper body strength is required, and we will actively be using our feet as part of the process.
You will need the following materials/supplies for this class:
- 1 foot treadle/broom-winder
- 1 handle (3/4-1″ diameter)
- 1 stitching clamp
- 1 bodkin
- 55 pieces of whole broomcorn, presorted (for inner and outer layers)
- 1 roll of nylon cord
- waxed poly cord
- 1 pair of scissors
- drill
- bucket for soaking broomcorn
I have everything you will need for sale here (excluding drill, utility knife and bucket): https://handmadebrooms.com/shop/kit-for-appalachian-sweeper-broom-class/
